Lane Kiffin turns to hot hand while Simmons battles injury
When the spotlight shines this Saturday in Oxford, all eyes will be on who takes the first snap for Ole Miss against No. 4 LSU. The Rebels’ quarterback question has stirred anticipation all week, but sources confirm to On 3, that Trinidad Chambliss will make his third consecutive start.
Chambliss has been steady, keeping the Rebels undefeated in his two starts. Against Tulane, he threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 112 yards. That performance showcased his dual-threat ability, the type of spark Ole Miss has needed with Austin Simmons sidelined by an ankle injury.
Meanwhile, Simmons, who opened the season as the starter, hasn’t fully healed. He briefly returned against Arkansas but quickly limped off. Lane Kiffin didn’t close the door on Simmons, saying, “At 100% he was our starting quarterback. But we don’t know what percentage he’ll be.” For now, Ole Miss trusts Chambliss.
The redshirt sophomore has rewarded that faith. He has completed nearly 68% of his passes with 719 yards and four touchdowns, plus 195 yards and two scores on the ground. His 11.6 yards per attempt lead the SEC, and he ranks second in passer rating.
LSU looms as Chambliss’ biggest test yet. If he delivers again, his Heisman chatter will grow louder, and Simmons’ path back to QB1 will only get tougher.
