The Detroit Lions will begin putting their practice squad together on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lions whittled their roster down ahead of the cutdown deadline on Tuesday, but the team still has four open roster spots as of this writing.

Detroit had three after the deadline, but a fourth opened up after the Tim Patrick trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Lions will navigate waivers on Wednesday, with claims being processed at noon ET. After that, practice squad signings should begin happening, but keep in mind no signing is official until the team confirms it.

Each team can have 16 players on the practice squad, and teams with a player from the International Player Pathway Program are allowed one extra.

Here's some more important practice squad rules, per ESPN:

  • Up to six of the 17 players can have unlimited NFL experience, which is a big development in recent years. Previously, players could have no more than two accrued NFL seasons for eligibility.

  • Every Tuesday, teams can designate four players as protected, so they can't be placed on another team's active roster from that day until kickoff.

  • Two players can be promoted to the active roster on game days. Then they return to the practice squad, unless the team offers a one-year deal.

  • Teams can't activate a player more than twice; after the second time, they must decide whether to promote him to the active roster.
