With the NFL roster cut deadline quickly approaching on Aug. 26, teams are evaluating their group of players to decide which 53 will make up their roster to start the 2025 season.

The Indianapolis Colts are among the teams with difficult cut decisions to make, including at a position which appears to still be in flux.

The Colts entered training camp with a deep running back rotation behind Jonathan Taylor, with Tyler Goodson, rookie DJ Giddens and Khalil Herbert being the main options.

Now, Goodson is dealing with an elbow injury which could land him on injured reserve, putting his status to begin the season up in the air.

Herbert is also nursing an injury of his own and just recently returned to practice this week. Due to his lack of availability combined with uninspiring impact when on the field, Herbert has become a potential cut candidate.

To complicate things further, undrafted rookie Ulysses Bentley IV has put together a strong preseason, including a two-touchdown performance in the finale against the Bengals.

All in all, it’s a difficult group to forecast, according to 107.5 The Fan’s Kevin Bowen

“Good luck predicting names after Taylor and Giddens,” he wrote in his 53-man roster prediction. “If Goodson is an IR candidate (to return later in the year?), perhaps it’s Bentley IV that cracks the initial 53-man roster.”

The details of the evaluation process are unknown, and we won’t know where the Colts stand on their running backs until official transactions are made ahead of the cut deadline.
