With the NFL’s 53-man roster cut deadline coming up on Aug. 26, teams are currently in trimming mode as they decide who belongs on their squad to begin the 2025 season.

With the difficulty of cutting players also comes the difficulty of selecting who deserves a spot. The Indianapolis Colts have multiple positions seemingly up for grabs, but one final spot appears hard to place.

Joel Erickson of the Indianapolis Star believes the Colts final cornerback spot is the most competitive on the roster.

“Handicapping the final spot is no easy task,” Erickson wrote. “Undrafted rookie Johnathan Edwards got the attention of the coaching staff during training camp and took a week’s worth of starting snaps due to injuries. Veteran Samuel Womack III started eight games last season, but he struggled with penalties throughout training camp and suffered a hamstring injury last week that complicates his situation. Another veteran, Chris Lammons, signed midway through training camp as a backup nickel and special teamer. All three of those players appear to be battling for one spot, potentially making it the most competitive spot on the roster.”

Both Womack and Lammons have history with the Colts, suggesting they could hold the upper hand. But Womack’s injuries and struggles in camp make his place far from secure, and Lammons offers little on the defensive side compared to his impact on special teams. It’s likely special teams coordinator Brian Mason will have a say there.

Edwards, while getting an opportunity to log a start in preseason, never recorded a pass defended and registered 10 tackles across the three warmup games.

Indy typically only keeps six cornerbacks, but depending on how they feel about their current group, general manager Chris Ballard may make an exception.
