2026 NFL mock draft: Jets trade up for franchise quarterback image

New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn may be very confident in quarterback Justin Fields and his passing attack, but not many share his conviction. Fields is entering his fifth NFL season and is already on his third team, and not for no reason. Despite his impressive traits, his tremendous athleticism, and the occasional eye-popping big-time throw, Fields has never proven to be a franchise quarterback.

Hope remains high for Gang Green, but the most likely outcome of the upcoming season is another rollercoaster year for Justin Fields that ends with a bottom-five record for the Jets. That’s what ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) is predicting, at least. Field Yates, a draft analyst for ESPN, recently created his preseason 2026 NFL mock draft and he has the Jets sitting with the No. 4 selection.

In this simulation, Yates projects the Jets to trade up to the second overall pick with the other New York team, who will likely ride with Jaxson Dart next year, and select Justin Fields’ replacement, South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers.

Here’s what Yates has to say about this potential scenario: “Sellers is a huge and powerful thrower who made massive strides in his game in 2024. His escapability from pressure in the pocket is a true X factor; some plays on his tape show shades of Josh Allen. His best moments are jaw-dropping, and his overall mobility is superb. Sellers threw the football much better in the second half of last season, too, finishing with 18 TD passes and seven INTs.

Jets fans likely don’t want to think about yet another year of losing just to hope and pray that another rookie quarterback finally drags them back to relevance in 2026, but there’s no denying the likelihood of the 2025 season playing out exactly this way. Maybe Justin Fields turns in an MVP-caliber season and shocks the NFL world. I just wouldn’t hold my breath.
