The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly scouring the trade market for wide receiver help.
The news comes from The Athletic's Dianna Russini, who adds that the Las Vegas Raiders, Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets are also looking for a wide receiver ahead of cutdown day.
"The Raiders, Steelers, Vikings and Jets continue to scour the veteran wide receiver market ahead of roster cutdown day, sources say," Russini reported.
The Steelers' interest in adding a wide receiver certainly makes sense.
The team doesn't have an established No. 2 option on the roster behind DK Metcalf and sports shaky options like Roman Wilson, Calvin Austin and others.
Wilson is coming off a disappointing rookie campaign that was marred by injury and Austin is better suited as a No. 3 option in a wide receivers room. Austin has also battled injury this offseason.
Publicly, the Steelers have said they are content with what they have currently, but this rumor says otherwise.
“I feel really good about that receiver room,” general manager Omar Khan said earlier this month. “In my opening press conference, I got a bunch of questions comparing it to last year. And to me, it’s not even close. I mean, you guys saw some of it this past weekend … Calvin (Austin) is banged up a little bit, but we’ll get him back.
"But Roman Wilson and Brandon Johnson, you saw the emergence of young guys like Ke’Shawn (Williams) and obviously we added DK (Metcalf). I feel good about this group. And when we traded for Jonnu [Smith], I loved his versatility.”
The Steelers do have two solid pass-catching tight ends in Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith, but that simply isn't enough.
Along with Williams and Johnson, Scotty Miller, Ben Skowronek and Robert Woods are all vying for a roster spot, but none of them are No. 2 receivers.
For a team that is seemingly all in on 2025, the Steelers need to do something to improve their situation or we could see a repeat of 2024, when Pittsburgh's wide receiver group was simply inadequate and hurt the offense.
