Venus Williams' US Open return unfortunately ended as soon as it began, with the seven-time grand slam winner bowing out in the first round to last year's semifinalist Karolina Muchova.
It was a valiant effort from the 45-year-old, who came down from a set to win the second set and give herself a fighting chance. However, Muchova was once again in control by the final set, leading to a 3-6, 6-2, 1-6 loss for Williams.
The two-time US Open champion, made a record 25th singles appearance at her home major with this bout against Muchova.
