Fifth seed Taylor Fritz is set for a familiar clash in the third round of Wimbledon 2025, taking on Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, a rematch of their Eastbourne semifinal just days earlier.
Fritz has had to fight tooth and nail to stay alive at the All England Club. He came back from two sets down to edge out Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a rain-disrupted opening-round thriller, then went the distance again in round two, this time outlasting Davidovich Fokina in a five-set battle: 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.
As for Davidovich Fokina, he’s still chasing that elusive maiden ATP Tour title. The 26-year-old Spaniard came close twice this season, falling short in the finals at Delray Beach and Acapulco.
He also made solid runs during the clay swing, reaching the semis in Monte Carlo, where he fell to Carlos Alcaraz, and the quarters in Barcelona, where Karen Khachanov ended his charge. But momentum stalled after that, with early exits in four straight events.
Shifting to grass, Davidovich Fokina showed signs of revival in Eastbourne, where he made a semifinal run before once again being stopped by Fritz. He carried that form into Wimbledon, cruising past Brandon Holt in straight sets in the opener. In round two, he dispatched Botic van de Zandschulp 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, saving eight of eleven break points along the way.
