Bishop Gorman rolled to a 35-14 victory – or was it a 2-0 victory – at home against Lone Peak on Friday in a game that was called just after halftime following some pushing and shoving and a lengthy referees' review.

After a small altercation on the field in which no punches were thrown, more than three Lone Peak players left the sideline for the field, and that constituted a forfeiture with 9:25 left in the third by NIAA rule.

Lone Peak had found some footing after Bishop Gorman got off to a blistering start. The Gaels led 21-0 after one quarter on touchdown passes from Maika Eugenio to Zyren Micah Menor and Isaiah Nickels plus a pick-six from Pesi Silva Jr. Lone Peak got on the board early in the second quarter to cut it to 21-7 and scored again with 42 seconds left in the half to make it 28-14 after Bishop Gorman had gone back up three scores on another Nickels touchdown catch. Eugenio threw his fourth touchdown pass of the half with five seconds left to Massiah Mingo.

And that was, unexpectedly, all the scoring for the evening. Eugenio finished with 270 yards and four touchdowns passing, and he might've finished with upwards of 400 yards and six touchdowns the way the game was going.

The final score was 35-14, but with the game ruled a forfeit so early in the game, it might be listed as a 2-0 forfeit score. Either way, it was yet another dominant outing for a consensus top-three team in the country and national championship frontrunner.

Two perennial Western USA high school football powers will fight to stay unbeaten on Friday as reigning Nevada champion Bishop Gorman (2-0) hosts reigning Utah runner-up Lone Peak (3-0). Lone Peak is off to a blistering start with double-digit victories over in-state foes Crimson Cliffs, Orem, and Timpview. But it'll be the heavy underdog against 2023 national champion and nationwide No. 2 Bishop Gorman, which opened by beating Las Vegas Centennial and Kahuku (HI) by a combined 90-0.

Bishop Gorman features a couple of the premier defensive players in the country and SN All-Americans in DE Prince Williams (Arizona) and S Jett Washington (Oregon), and many other serious D-1 prospects. They include QB Maika Eugenio (Hawaii), who's completed 38 of 45 passes (84.4%) for 585 yards and seven touchdown to one interception, good for a 155.4 passer rating. He has a deep receiver corps that features Zyren Micah Menor, Kaina Watson, Isaiah Nickels (Hawaii), Massiah Mingo (New Mexico), and Trent Walker.

Like the Gaels, Lone Peak has an offense that's leaned more on the pass than run so far this season with a QB in the midst of a particularly efficient season. Cruz Christensen has completed 32 of 47 passes (68.1%) for 508 yards, six touchdowns, and no interceptions throwing to the likes of Utah commits Jaron and Kennan Pula and pass-catching RB Tate Barney. The Knights' highest-ranked college recruit is 4-star OT Bott Mulitalo, a 6-foot-5, 290-pound BYU commit.

These two teams most recently played in 2019 and 2021, with Bishop Gorman winning both matchups.
