BELLFLOWER, CA, Aug. 29 — About the only thing you could say about the Eastwood [El Paso, TX] football team Friday night is they were real Troopers.
For the second straight year, they traveled to California to take on the national powerhouse St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves in a football game. The fact they lost the 2024 game, 71-14, didn't stop them from boarding a bus and fulfilling their two-game contract. And with a severe case of bus lag, they still left their hotel for their Friday night game against the Braves, knowing full well the fate that awaited them, and showed up for the 7 p.m. local time kick.
At least physically.
In spirit, the Troopers played like a team still recovering from that long ride and maybe thinking about the next one. They quickly ended up in a 21-0 first-quarter hole which turned into 45-0 by halftime. Playing only for pride at that point, Eastwood managed to limit Bosco to 21 second-half points while scoring their only points of the game on a third-quarter Kingston Jefferies-to-Jude Walker pass and catch.
On the short end of a 66-7 outcome, there may not have been much for the Troopers to celebrate Friday night. But at least they knew boarding the bus back to El Paso, Texas, that the competition will be a whole lot easier moving forward. They'll return to action next Friday against a Chapin [El Paso, TX] Huskies, an 0-1 team that's much closer to being in their own league.
St. John Bosco, meanwhile, will get its first real test that night when the Braves host the No. 4 St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] Panthers.
