Port Adelaide assistant coach Chad Cornes has opened up on his axing after the Power said he would no longer be a part of the coaching panel next year.

Current coach Ken Hinkley is leaving the club, with 2004 premiership player Josh Carr taking over the reins of coaching as part of the succession plan

Cornes, who also played in the 2004 premiership for Port, said Carr told him he wouldn't be part of his coaching panel in 2026.

"Josh told me seven weeks ago, before the Brisbane game, that was not a great moment," Cornes said in a press conference.

"But I felt that coming throughout most of the year. It was disappointing then, but right now I feel really good about it."

Cornes played 239 games for Port Adelaide before moving across to GWS for his final two years of his career, before rejoining the Power as a coach in 2015, originally as their SANFL coach before moving to AFL.

He added that although it wasn't his call, he feels it was the right time and was thankful for his time at the club.

"It was a genuine dream to come back to Port Adelaide; I was so envious of what was happening here. To coach the SANFL team for two years was unbelievable. I have loved every moment of coaching. It has been a great time," Cornes said.

"I will always be a Port supporter."

Cornes said he will take some time away from coaching to work in the media and fitness industries and will see if the passion for coaching comes back.

He joins Travis Boak and coach Ken Hinkley to leave the club after their final game against Gold Coast on Friday night at Adelaide Oval.
