The turbulent career of Josh Schuster has reached another turning point after South Sydney confirmed the 24-year-old was among nine players released at season’s end.

The former Manly sensation, once signed to a $2.4 million deal with the Sea Eagles, failed to make a first-grade appearance for the Rabbitohs after being thrown a lifeline by coach Wayne Bennett.

Schuster managed just five outings in the NSW Cup during his time at Redfern, his struggles with form and fitness continuing after his departure from Manly, where injuries and mental health challenges had derailed his early promise.

The list of exits also included Shaquai Mitchell, brother of Latrell, along with Jacob Host, Siliva Havili, Ben Lovett, Fletcher Myers, Mikaele Ravalawa, Gerome Burns and Haizyn Mellars. Rabbitohs chief executive Blake Solly paid tribute to their contributions.

“Firstly, we would like to thank all of these players for their service to the Rabbitohs over the years,” Solly said. “They have all contributed to the club in various ways, whether it is on the field of play, helping prepare teams on the training ground or contributing to our community through Souths Cares and other initiatives.”

Schuster’s exit leaves his playing future uncertain. Once billed as one of the brightest young talents in the NRL, his inability to rediscover consistency now places him at a career crossroads. With Souths finishing 14th after a difficult season, the Rabbitohs are set to reset, while Schuster faces the challenge of salvaging his place in the top flight.
