Melbourne Storm star Jahrome Hughes faces a pivotal Tuesday as he races against time to return from a broken arm in time for Friday night’s preliminary final against Cronulla at AAMI Park.
After undergoing surgery to insert a plate and screws following a late-season loss to the Brisbane Broncos, the Melbourne halfback took part in an open training session with his teammates on Monday, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the team list.
However, the Storm plan to subject the 30-year-old’s surgically repaired arm to a more thorough examination on Tuesday to determine if he is fit for Friday night’s clash.
Cameron Munster remains optimistic about his halves partner’s chances this week, noting that Hughes has already returned to contact work to rebuild his confidence.

“Yeah, I think he’s ticking all the boxes at the moment with the physios, I’m not too sure on what the coaches are going to do, but at this current stage he looks the goods,” Munster stated.
“So hopefully the form holds up in the next five days and we will go from there. I think he did a little bit of contact last week just to give himself confidence.
“I think he got through unscathed. I think he’s fit and ready to go. So it all depends on the coaching staff and whether they are ready to pick him.
“From all reports, the physios have given him the green light and there is enough strength there to be able to get through this week and next week.”
While Hughes’ return would be the biggest boost for the Storm, he may not be the only player coming back.
Fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen is available for selection again after recovering from concussion, and back-rower Shawn Blore has been cleared to play following a nearly month-long absence due to a throat problem.
