The Detroit Lions wrapped up their preseason slate on Saturday afternoon with a 19-10 win over the Houston Texans. Now, it's time to put together the initial 53-man roster.
The Lions will make several cuts between now and Tuesday, Aug. 26, when the deadline to trim the roster down to 53 comes at 4 p.m. ET.
After that, Detroit will take a long look at the players other teams cut to decide if any of them can help fill a hole prior to Week 1. Players with four or more years of NFL service can be signed immediately after getting cut, but players with less service must go through waiver on Wednesday first.
As the Lions' roster has gotten more talented over the years, general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell admitted making cuts has become harder, especially as it pertains to developmental players.
"I feel like every year it gets a little bit harder to decide what you want to do," he said. "I just keep bringing it up, we're looking for the best 69 players we can find, and how do we keep all of them? Because we're going to need all of them," Campbell said. "That's the challenge."
”What’s gotten really hard — and it’s really been visible this year — is that in the past, especially in our first couple years, we had a lot of just young, developmental players that we really liked and we had a lot of room for," Holmes said. "And as the guys have made these leaps and bounds and the talent has gotten better, it’s hard to always find room for those young, developmental guys.”
