Manchester United are prepared for more changes in the coming weeks with major pressure growing on Ruben Amorim's position at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese coach has won just one of his first four Premier League games of the 2025/26 season alongside an EFL Cup exit at the hands of fourth-tier Grimsby Town.

The latest update hints at Amorim having the three league clashes up until the October international break to save his job and prevent leaving less than a year after landing in Manchester.

If Amorim stays, he will aim for more squad moves in January, after offloading several big-name stars in the summer.

Amorim claimed he chose not to listen to offers for England international Kobbie Mainoo as he stills a place for the 20-year-old in his plans.

However, actions continue to speak louder than words, with Mainoo starting just 12 of United's 31 Premier League games under Amorim.

Just 73 minutes of Premier League action underlines Amorim's lack of intent with Mainoo and Real Madrid are rumoured to be considering a cut-price offer at the start of 2026.

Despite all parties appearing to b on a path of separation, United icon Paul Scholes has called on the club to fight for Mainoo, and suggested an instant solution to fitting him into the starting XI.

"When he came onto the scene a few years ago, I thought 'wow' what a player this is," Scholes told BBC Sport.

"There's been some questions over his legs and ability to get around the pitch of late, but it's not always about that.

"Bruno Fernandes can be fine in central midfield, as long as he's got all the ball, but against better teams that's not going to happen. That's when you need to know that position brilliantly.

"For me, Mainoo is the same in that respect on the ball, but like Fernandes - he needs a proper partner next to him.

"I don't think Manuel Ugarte has the quality to do it. We all now Casemiro's qualities over the years, but again, he's slowed down.

"When I think back to my time playing that position. The player I had next to me knew the position so well, Roy Keane, Nicky Butt, Michael Carrick...they were all perfect for me.

"I don't think the partnership is working in there right now with any of them because they don't know the position as well as they should do."

Amorim has opted for a system change this season, with a 3-4-2-1 formation, placing Fernandes and Casemiro as his central two, and that formation may need to change to facilitate a Mainoo recall.
