The Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest is an American institution regardless of who is participating, but something about the event is different when Joey Chestnut shows up hungry.

After missing the 2024 contest due to a sponsorship dispute, "Jaws" returned to the Coney Island stage in dominant fashion in 2025, eating 70.5 hot dogs to claim his 17th yellow mustard belt.

Chestnut said before the event began he thought he could eat 80 hot dogs this year and beat his record of 76 that he set in 2021. While the "Caravaggio of Consumption" fell short of that goal, he proved he is still the greatest eater of his generation. Chestnut beat 2024 champion Patrick Bertoletti by 24 hot dogs and topped 70 for the seventh time in his career, eating at a 9.2 dogs per minute pace at one point in the competition.

“I found a pretty good rhythm," Chestnut said. "My goal was 70 to 77. I really wanted a little bit more, but there’s next year and I’m just happy to be here."

On the women's side, Miki Sudo successfully defend her title with 33 hot dogs. She remained perfect at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, winning the event for the 11th time in 11 tries. Michelle Lesco finished in second with 22.75 hot dogs.

Sudo started out by eating eight hot dogs in the first minute, but then consumed less than three dogs per minute for the rest of the contest. Regardless, she fought through the caloric crash to come out on top once again.

“I guess I refuse to lose," Sudo said. “I refuse to give him. And even when I do stumble, I get right back up.’’

Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contests 2025 updates, highlights

12:55 p.m. — He's done it! Joey Chestnut returns to win the 2025 Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. He made a final push to consume 70 glizzies and claim his 17th title.

12:52 p.m. — Chestnut's pace has slowed but he's eaten 60 hot dogs with two minutes go. He's 24 glizzies ahead of Bertoletti. "Jaws" can cruise in the final stretch.

12:49 p.m. — Halfway home and Chestnut has downed 46 hot dogs. Bertoletti is in second with 30. Look at that DPM (dogs per minute)!

12:46 p.m. —Chestnut eats 11 hot dogs in the first minute and has a commanding lead. If he sustains that pace he'll shatter his own record of 76.

12:45 p.m. — Here. We. Go.

12:41 p.m. — Chestnut gets a special introduction. "He will not stop until he stands side by side with the gods," Shea said.

12:39 p.m. — 2024 champion Patrick Bertoletti crosses the stage. The ESPN broadcast describes him as a "consumate professional eater." He's probably the best chance to upset Chestnut today.

12:30 p.m. — George Shea is finally introducing the men's competitors. Chestnut is sure to get the loudest roar from the crowd.

12:05 p.m. — Chestnut just said on the broadcast that he needs to eat 48-50 hot dogs in the first five minutes to get to 80 total glizzies. No one has ever reached that benchmark before.

11:55 a.m. —The men's competition is set to kick off on ESPN2 in five minutes. Joey Chestnut is looking for his 17th title.

11:10 a.m. — Sudo finishes with 33 hot dogs and wins her 11th pink belt! That's 11 titles in 11 tries at the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest for the greatest women's eater alive.

11:09 a.m. — With a minute to go, Sudo just ate her 30th hot dog.

11:06 a.m. — Sudo now leads 22-15 over Michelle Lesco with four minutes to go. The reigning champ is definitely not moving at her world record pace, but still has a commanding advantage.

11:00 a.m. — And they're off! Sudo jumps out to an early lead with 8 hot dogs in the first minute.

10:58 a.m. — Sudo walks out with her pink mustard belt to the loudest cheer yet, ready to defend her title.

10:50 a.m. — George Shea is introducing the women's competitors, who are walking onto the stage as the crowd cheers.

10:35 a.m. — Miki Sudo, who set a women's world record by eating 51 hot dogs in 2024, will look to defend her title live on ESPN3. Apparently, her larger-than-average jaw makes her the best women's competitive eater in the world.

10:30 p.m. — The fans at Coney Island are ready! We are about 15 minutes away from the start of the women's competition.

10:15 p.m. — If you need of a refresher on what happened with Chestnut last year, The Sporting News has you covered. A sponsorship dispute kept him out of the contest in 2024. His competitiors are probably not thrilled to see "Jaws" back in the waters this year.

10:00 p.m. — Good morning! We are about 30 minutes away from one of the greatest spectacles in sports, as the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest will get underway soon. Miki Sudo is the favorite on the women's side, and Joey Chestnut makes his return to the men's competition.
