Somers Tusker Dean Palazzolo encounters Whitesboro defenders Tyler Thorngren and Jax Hall (from left) during the NYSPHSAA Class A football championship game Friday, Dec. 6, 2024. The Tuskers saw there 27-game win streak end against the Iona Prep Gaels.

With nearly 14,000 11-man high school football teams competing across the country, there are always several dozen teams on lengthy double-digit win streaks.

And on any given weekend, several of those large streaks usually end. This weekend was no different as at least a dozen teams on double-digit win streaks saw those long runs come to an end. That included the nation's fourth-longest win streak by a Class 2A school in Oklahoma's OSSAA ranks.

The Washington [OK] Warriors had not lost a game since December 11, 2021, when they fell, 17-13, to the Marlow [OK] Outlaws in the OSSAA Class 2A state championship game.

Washington's 45-game streak included three Oklahoma Class 2A state titles

Following that 2021 loss to Marlow, Washington kicked off their streak with a 39-24 win over the Vian [OK] Wolverines in the 2022 season opener on August 26. The Sulphur squad that ended their streak Friday night almost ended it one week after it started. In the second game of that 2022 season, they took the Warriors to the limit before succumbing in a 27-25 loss. The Warriors then ended up running the table to finish 15-0 that year, including a 17-14 win in the title game over the Millwood [Oklahoma City, OK] Falcons.

The 2023 season was more of the same with the Warriors going on another 15-0 run. The only close call that year came in the semifinals when they survived a scare in a 35-34 win over the Jones [OK] Longhorns. One week later, they dispatched Millwood again in a 41-24 victory for their second straight title.

Last year, it was Sulphur again that almost ended the run. In their usual spot in Week 2, the first Friday night in September, the upset-minded Bulldogs came to Washington with bad intentions, and in a classic matchup, the two rivals went to double overtime before the Warriors finally prevailed 27-24. They eventually went on to finish 14-0, and for the third straight season, they beat Millwood for the title, this time in a 7-6 defensive slugfest.

Washington's seniors had never lost a game until Friday night, so they'll be in an unfamiliar position next Friday when they visit the Purcell [OK] Dragons in what they hope will be the first win in another long win streak.

Two more long Sooner State win streaks fall this weekend

Two other long Sooner streaks fell. First, the Woodland [Fairfax, OK] Cougars saw their 14-game streak come to an end in a 34-20 loss to the Pawnee [OK] Black Bears. And the Rejoice Christian [Owasso, OK] Eagles also had a 13-game win streak on the line against the Cascia Hall [Tulsa, OK] Commandos, eventually losing in a 21-14 setback.

On a positive note, however, the Lincoln Christian [Tulsa, OK] Bulldogs recorded a landmark win in their own active streak, joining the 30-win club with a 35-6 win over the Heritage Hall [Oklahoma City, OK] Chargers.

Teams on long win streaks collide in head-to-head matchups

Two high-profile games involved matchups where both teams were on long winning streaks.

Early on Friday night, the TSN No. 13 Bergen Catholic [Oradell, NJ] Crusaders paid a visit to the West Boca Raton [Boca Raton, FL] Bulls. The Crusaders carried a 12-game win streak into the contest while the Bulls were on a 16-game run of their own. In a tight matchup, Bergen Catholic overcame an early 7-0 deficit to eventually build a 21-7 advantage before holding off West Boca Raton late for a 21-14 win.

Then later in the evening in Utah, the TSN No. 16 Corner Canyon [Draper, UT] Chargers played host to the TSN No. 23 Liberty [Peoria, AZ] Lions in a matchup between the top teams from Utah and Arizona. In the end, it wasn't even close with Corner Canyon blowing out their visitors from the Grand Canyon State in a 45-14 rout.
