National Week 6 high school football composite rankings: St. John Bosco edges Bishop Gorman for top spot in rankings image

St. John Bosco takes over the No. 1 position in The Sporting News Composite rankings with five No. 1 votes to Bishop Gorman's three.

One week after surviving a close call at home against the unranked Kahuku [HI] Red Raiders, the Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs finally ran out of luck.

Mater Dei managed to hold off that Kahuku squad, 21-18, but the end result suggested the kings of California were living on borrowed time. A 21-game win streak is a long run for any team, even a two-time defending national champion like the Monarchs. But after watching Mater Dei struggle for most of its first two games, including a 26-23 win in the season opener at the St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders, there was a sense of inevitability.

This Monarchs team would eventually fall.

And fall they did last week, as the Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies raced out to a 33-7 halftime lead (including a 28-0 first-quarter blitzkrieg) before holding on while Mater Dei mounted the expected comeback. The Monarchs stormed out of the halftime to go on a 29-0 third-quarter rampage, rising like a Phoenix from the ashes of their first-half meltdown to take a 36-33 lead at the end of the third quarter. At that point, it felt like the Monarchs had figured out how to escape again.

But this time, the Huskies would not be denied. A field goal followed by a late touchdown in the fourth quarter gave the hosts all they would need to hold off the champions in a stunning 43-36 upset in Corona. Now, the Monarchs fall again – this time in The Sporting News High School Football Composite Rankings.

Mater Dei tumbled from No. 1 to No. 7 in The Sporting News High School Football Top 25 yesterday, and, they also fell from the top spot in all of the other lists that comprise SN's Composite Rankings. That includes the Sports Illustrated Power 25 where they slipped all the way to No. 18. In the composite, they settled in at No.  8 – still one spot ahead of that Centennial squad at No. 9.

St. John Bosco, Bishop Gorman split the No. 1 votes in the wake of Mater Dei's loss

The St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves are the new No. 1 this week after picking up five No. 1 votes from the eight selectors that make up SN's composite rankings. The Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels collected the other three so, for the first time in 2025, we don't have a unanimous No. 1 team.

Mater Dei's loss also spoiled the potential for a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup between Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman this Friday. Instead, the Monarchs will visit the No. 2/SN No. 1 Gaels as the nation's No. 8/SN No. 7 ranked team, looking to cling to their suddenly fragile dreams of a third straight national championship. That game is also The Sporting News High School Football Game of the Week.

National Week 6 high school football composite rankings

Every week, we'll compile the rankings from those eight different national selectors to create an all-in-one composite list of the teams in the order of most points accumulated.

The main reason? There is no consensus!

Take for instance Mater Dei this week. The Monarchs still rank as high as No. 5 in Blue Star Media's rankings while they've fallen all the way to No. 18 in Sports Illustrated's Power 25. For the record, they check in at No. 7 in the latest edition of The Sporting News High School Football Top 25.

Teams ranked in our composite index include the Top 25 from each of the following rankings:

A first place vote is worth 25 points, second place worth 24 points, third place worth 23 points ... and so forth through 25th place which nets one point. With eight polls in use, a consensus top-ranked team receives up to 200 points. When possible, ties are resolved in order of the team ranked by the most selectors followed by the team receiving the highest ranking from any one or more selectors; if they are still tied, then we will try to resolve the tie by the team receiving the lowest ranking from any one or more selectors. If it is still tied, we will note it as a (tie) in parentheses.

Here are this week's top 25 in our composite rankings:
