Albany football junior Jake Buttweiler pressures Stewartville quarterback Vincent Wellik in the 2024 Class 3A state semifinal at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Wellik and his Tigers' saw their 30-game win streak end Friday night.

With nearly 14,000 11-man high school football teams competing across the country, there are always several dozen teams on lengthy double-digit win streaks.

And on any given weekend, several of those large streaks usually end. This weekend was no different as at least 26 teams on double-digit win streaks saw those long runs terminated. That included a team tied for the 10th longest win streak in the country.

The Stewartville [MN] Tigers had just logged a landmark win a week ago with their 30th straight in a 20-14 victory over the Totino-Grace [Fridley, MN] Eagles. That turned out to the be final win in their long streak which ended Friday night in a 21-18 loss to the Kasson [MN]-Mantorville Komets.

Stewartville's 30-game streak included the school's first two state titles

Stewartville's 30-game run was tied for the nation's 10th longest win streak headed into the weekend. It spanned two Minnesota MSHSL Class 3A state championships with back-to-back 14-0 seasons in 2023 and 2024. The Tigers' previous loss dated back to November 10, 2022, in a 60-22 blowout at the hands of the Hutchinson [MN] Tigers in the quarterfinals of the MSHSL's Class 4A playoffs. The win streak then began in the 2023 season opener in a 27-13 victory over the Waseca [MN] Bluejays on August 26.

The Tigers claimed the state title later that season on November 25 when they beat the Annandale [MN] Cardinals, 43-13. The title was the first in school history for the Tigers, and last season, they added a second trophy, following a 43-22 decision versus the Dassel-Cokato [MN] Chargers.

The streak continued through the first two weeks of this season before the loss Friday night. Stewartville (2-1) will try to get another winning run started next Friday night, September 19, when they visit the Winona [MN] Winhawks (2-1).

Decatur Seahawks' win streak ends in 2025 season opener

The Decatur [Berlin, MD] Seahawks entered Friday night's season opener on a 28-game win streak as the two-time defending Maryland MPSSAA Class 2A state champions. They ended the night 0-1 after falling to the Wicomico [Salisbury, MD] Indians, 23-14, in the opening game of the season.

The Seahawks' previous loss came in a 40-33 setback in the MPSSAA Class 2A semifinals to the Milford Mill Academy [Baltimore, MD] Millers. They followed that heartbreaker with a 2-0 win via forfeit in the 2023 season opener to get their streak started. The Queen Anne's County [Centreville, MD] Lions were hit with penalties due to violations that occurred that spring, and they were required to forfeit their opening game of the 2023 season.

But Decatur got the streak started in earnest the following week on the field in a 49-8 win over the Randallstown [MD] Rams. They kept it going throughout the season, capped by a 21-13 win over the Huntingtown [MD] Hurricanes in the Class 2A title game. Last year, they added a second straight state title beating the Hurricanes again in a 13-12 nailbiter.

Decatur (0-1) will try to break into the 2025 win column next Friday night at the North Caroline [Ridgely, MD] Bulldogs (0-2).

Unanimous No. 1 Mater Dei falls to Centennial in one of Week 5's biggest surprises

The Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs had not lost to the Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies since a 42-36 loss on November 27, 2015.

But after a decade of futility, Centennial finally broke through Friday night on their own home field, dealing Mater Dei a 43-36 loss to shake up the national championship picture while ending the Monarchs' 21-game win streak. Mater Dei will fall from the No. 1 spot which will go to the undefeated SN No. 2 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels, a 35-10 winner over the East St. Louis [IL] Flyers Friday night. Centennial already had a loss headed into the game, and with most of The Sporting News High School Football Top 25 winning this weekend, they won't have much room to move up.

It won't get any easier for the Monarchs this coming week as they have to make their own trip to Vegas to take on the newly-minted No. 1 Gaels.
